SummerIce: A Simple solution for information overload

I had a problem

I love to read. I could spend hours going down rabbit holes on any number of topics, both for personal interest and work. But who has the time? I was facing information overload, with more to read than I could ever get to. I was spending hours every week just trying to keep up. There had to be a better way! I knew that AI tools existed that could help, but I wanted something super simple, something that would let me quickly decide if an article was worth my time.

I was looking for a one-click solution that would summarize any article with the press of a button or a keyboard shortcut, but I couldn't find one. So, I decided to build it myself!

That's how SummerIce was born.

I built a solution

SummerIce is a free browser extension that allows you to quickly and easily summarize articles on any website, and YouTube videos too. Just click on the SummerIce icon, or use the keyboard shortcut, and you'll get a concise summary in just a few seconds. I've found that these AI-generated summaries capture around 90% of the information in the original article. That means I get the key takeaways without having to spend time on the whole thing.

Make it yours

In the settings, you can choose how your summaries look:

• Length: brief (about 100 words), standard (about 200) or detailed (about 400).
• Format: paragraphs or bullet points.
• Model: pick the model for your provider, from fast and cheap to higher quality.

Long articles are split into parts, so the summary covers the whole piece, not just the opening.

If Ctrl+Shift+Y is already taken in your browser, you can set your own shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts (or edge://extensions/shortcuts in Edge).

A few things to keep in mind

There is one important thing to note: You need your own API key from one of the supported AI providers to use SummerIce. This is because the extension uses their AI models to generate the summaries. It is paid, but it's paid based on usage, not a monthly subscription, and in my experience, my usage only costs less than $1 per month, and I use it daily.

You can get an API key from any of these:

• OpenAI: OpenAI API keys
• Anthropic (Claude): Anthropic Console
• Google Gemini: Google AI Studio
• xAI (Grok): xAI Console

When you install SummerIce, a setup page opens. Pick your provider, paste your key, and you're good to go. You can switch providers or models later in the settings.

SummerIce has no servers. Your API key and settings stay in your browser. When you ask for a summary, the page text goes straight from your browser to the provider you chose, and nowhere else. No account, no analytics, no tracking.
